O Me! O Life! by Walt Whitman

Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,

Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,

Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)

Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d,

Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me,

Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined,

The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

Answer.

That you are here—that life exists and identity,

That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

My analysis:

To contribute a verse-- what a romantic way to say to leave a mark. To leave a mark, let alone make a difference. Reality is constantly moving, and no matter how badly we may want it to, it is never going to stop. We're strapped into a ride that we can only get off of one way, and we don't get to decide when or how. But, to contribute a verse. How sensational.

Isn't that what we all yearn for? Isn't that why I have this blog. God forbid we just sink into oblivion. I don't think it's selfish to want to leave a mark, but I think it's important to consider what mark you will leave. I don't really think it's that hard to leave a verse, as we all take so many actions everyday that leaving a verse is inevitable. We touch so many lives, even if we don't think that we do. Every action we've ever taken has sent energy out into this universe. So rather, I aim to focus on is what tone your verse will take on.
